The mandolin has been around for more than three hundred years, and it has now evolved into two distinct body styles. The A-style has a pear shaped body, and has a wide tonal range. The F-style mandolin is more elaboate and has a voice well suited to Bluegrass and folk music. All mandolins have four pairs of strings, tuned in fifths. This makes for easy fingering and chord formations on the slender neck.
